According to study conducted by the University of Illinois, parents often treat their kids in different manner. Both the parents as well as siblings have the least idea, what actually is happening. Laurie Kramer, professor at the University of Illionois have stated that, “You’d think it would be clear when a child is receiving more positive or negative attention, and why that might be happening, but families don’t seem to talk much about these differences unless someone complains.”
According to the study conducted by the two professors of University of Missouri, Amanda K. Kowal and Jennifer L. Krull over 74 two-parent, middle class families having single child in an age group of 11-13 along with one teenager sibling. Interviews were conducted over all parents as well as siblings individually.
During interviews, certain amazing facts came into light. For Instance, although kids reported of difference in behavior between them and their siblings, still they were unable to give reasons for such behavior. But, Kramer also revealed that if they know reasons as well as understands their parents for such behavior then they got along well.
According to an earlier study conducted, siblings understand very well if difference in treatment occurs. Kramer stated an example, “For example, if a child is having trouble in school, parents may spend extra time with that child helping with homework and encouraging him. A brother or sister can usually understand that even if it means that they get less parental attention.”
Kramer further added,
“That means it’s important for families to talk about these issues, and for mothers and fathers to really listen to what their kids are telling them about how their actions are affecting them.”
