What do you think is the ideal age to which a child should be breast-fed? Before letting you reach any answers, I would like to tell you that there are women who have breast fed their babies for as long as seven years. And on the other hand there is DoH according to which promoting breast feeding is nothing more than “nanny statism”, which means its bad politics and best avoided.

With facts like this any mother will be skeptical about breast feeding. No doubt about the fact that breast feeding is the best a mother can give her baby. But another fact is that DoH and World Health Organization say that mothers should breastfeed exclusively to six months and as an add-on to other foods until the age of two.

So I think today, breast feeding is nothing more than a matter of personal choice of a mother. If you feel comfortable feeding your baby till he’s seven, then your are most welcome to go ahead...and with that you will definitely get a footage in some program on TV like ‘Extraordinary Breastfeeding’, and if you don’t find the need, even then you can proceed and go ahead to choose a bottle instead.

In such a scene, I’m afraid we are nearing a day when a breastfeeding mother will be the odd one out and breast feeding will be an extreme act for a mother.

And this will happen knowing the fact very well that breast fed babies have better health, have reduced chances of future heart disease and obesity, and gives babies a chance of a long and healthy life.
