According to a new study– parents who Smoke are risking the health of their Kids and putting them at risk of many lung diseases.
The study stated that the kids of smokers who right now don’t have any problem related to respiratory system but in reality, these kids face few problems in their respiratory passage that could certainly lead to lung problems in their later life.
The study was conducted by a researching team under Dr. Bert Arets at University Medical Centre Utrecht in the Netherlands.
Dr. Bert Arets, said in a prepared statement:
Everyone knows that children of smokers have more respiratory problems—more puffing, wheezing, cases of pneumonia—but until now we haven’t known if lung function is impaired in children of smokers who don’t have any respiratory complaints or diagnosed lung problems.
The researcher’s monitored 244 kids, aged 4 to12, those who don’t have any historical background of lung disease. The kids were categorized into 4 groups concerning the smoking habits of their parents: first —- those who never smoke, second – those who smoke after birth of the kid, but never smoked in pregnancy period, third –smoked during pregnancy but not after the birth, fourth — those who smoked during pregnancy and as well as after the pregnancy.
The Researching team discovered that kids — whose parents smoke had reduced lung function abnormality which is usually seen in smokers. The study found that those parents who smoke after the birth of their children are causing more harm to the lungs of their little ones. Smoking after the birth is proving more dangerous than smoking during pregnancy.
Most of the parents smoke more frequently before their children in the house due to smoking bans outside. This is proving to be more harmful for kid’s lung life.
The researching team has broadened their study to include 2,000 healthy children of smokers.
The study was presented at the American Throracic Society 2007 International Conference.
