SIDS: The mysterious infant killer, which has been taking a toll on the lives if babies as young as one year is under the close scrutiny of the doctors and scientists. Though the doctors have revealed not a cure but a hint towards the cause:
Researchers from Children’s Hospital of Boston, Massachusetts and Harvard Medical School believe that certain abnormalities in the brain reflected in the neurotransmitter called serotonin influences baby’s breathing, temperature and ability to wake up. When babies born with a higher amount of serotonin are made to sleep on their stomachs.
The conclusion was reached after assessing 31 infants 10 of which had died of SIDS.
Though this conclusion cannot be considered as a final verdict since it has revealed the situation post death, so scientists are working upon a test, which will determine the babies on a higher risk of SIDS, which will bring the situation under control to some extent.
