prisonA simple question how did you travel during the seventh or eighth month of your pregnancy? Hopefully either by a car...taxi or with a transport that was comfortable enough to keep your baby safe. But ever wondered there are some pregnant women who are stuffed into claustrophobic vans measuring 860mm by 620mm (34in by 24in), with hard seats and no seatbelts, to travel hundreds of miles. I am talking about the heavily pregnant prisoners who are being transported in conditions that are best described as “unethical and barbaric”.

Can you imagine the condition of a woman who had to travel in a dingy and rickety van for around two and a half hours just before the day she delivered her baby? It’s simply brutal.

Yes, these women are here for punishment but still such kind of an inhuman treatment should not be allowed at any cost. This will have a direct bearing on the unborn baby.

Global Solutions is one of the organizations that deal with the prison vehicles is well aware of the provisions provided for people with special needs, that includes pregnant women also, but the hard truth is that they do not get any complaints from the pregnant women, so they did not improvise upon their services.

In this light, I think it is for the prisoners to raise a collective voice against the uncivilized and harsh treatment meted out to them for they must know that the baby that they are carrying in their womb is being punished for just no fault of his.
