An article based on the Earth Day Celebrations, ‘Let’s plant babies, not trees, for Earth Day’, emphasizes the fact that ‘enough of trees!’ What is required for a proper balance in ecology is a balance in the growth of population, in a situation where the population is growing but at a much slower pace. But this growth in population is neutralized by an increase in the infant mortality rate. The statistics in the article points towards the imbalance in population. As per the statistics, majority of the population consists of people in their 60’s and there are few who are in their 20’s; and even the long predicted population explosion in Paul Ehrlich’s book ‘The Population Bomb’ has not materialized.
If you think that the planet earth will bulge out of size with more number of babies, read out loud what urban planning expert Dr. Ronald Utt of the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C., has to say:
The entire “human footprint” in the United States — every building, road, grocery store, farmhouse, you name it, takes up a grand total of less than 5 percent — yes, that’s 5 percent — of the continental United States land mass!
But if it is all about making it up for the survival of planet earth then decision has to be made on the basis of the development made in each continent and the capacity of every nation to support a rapid growth in population.
