Pediatricians at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore have postulated that kidney stones are becoming increasingly common in children.
Kidney specialist Dr. Alicia Neu stated,
‘More and more children with kidney stones are coming to us. While this is somewhat unexpected, it is not totally surprising given that so many other conditions are on the rise in children due to poor diet, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and obesity to name a few.’
The pediatricians have held excessive salt and intake of very less water responsible for the mounting trend.
The doctors have advised the kids to stay away from salty snacks, processed foods, and sodas and have asked to rinsed canned foods. In addition, they have suggested looking for products that have labels that say ‘no salt added’ or ‘low sodium’ and must have at least two liters of water per day.
Tea, coffee, dark chocolate, spinach, nuts and wheat bran could also augment kidney stones.
