With a view to help the kids who are suffering from cancer and their parents, hospitals in Toronto have come up with an interactive measure to prepare them for radiation. They have launched an educational CD-ROM called Radiation for Kids.
What is ‘Radiation for Kids’: This CD-ROM will show the parents and the kids what they are going to face health wise in the near future, when the treatment begins.
How will it work: The CD will show them the entire treatment with the help of touring a virtual kid: a tailor made girl/boy through the entire treatment process together with providing age-appropriate explanation of how the radiation will help treat the cancer.
What more will the CD have: Apart from this, the CD will also feature a number of interactive and motivational games fir kids to give them strength and courage to face what waiting.
Together with this, it will contain a glossary of medical terms for parents, in order to help them understand\d their child’s condition and progress in a better manner.
The CD also features guidelines for parents, on how to talk to kids about cancer.
Justina Erb, an 11 year old girl, is one such patient who has seen the ‘Radiation for Kids’ CD during her treatment and this is what she opines about it:
“The pictures on the CD-ROM were very similar to the real thing . . . It made me feel more confident about the whole thing.”
