According to the US scientists, the cause of permanent diabetes (insulin-dependent), among kids is coz of an enzyme Pancreatic Endoplasmic Reticulum Kinase’s (PERK) insufficiency.
The scientists assume that PERK deficiency might occur during a critical period of development before birth.
In an experiment with mice, they postulated that deficiency of the enzyme impedes the propagation of beta cells, which further block their general functioning and thus, kept them from grouping into islets.
The study’s leader Professor Douglas Cavener asserted,
‘What happens during fetal development predisposes people either to be able to maintain glucose levels normally or to have diabetes’.
