34_50Pregnancy itself brings not only physical changes among the women but also psychological changes they experience sudden mood swings. And at times, it is carried forward even when the phase of pregnancy is over. Gloominess may engulf women, which are actually the signs of postpartum depression or other types of the illness.

Dr. Joseph Antonowicz,
medical director of behavioral health at Altoona Regional Health System said in case, you’re suicidal a week after a baby’s born, you must seek help.

Postpartum depression is a severe form of depression that can build up within the first six months after giving birth. Its symptoms include:

1. Problem in falling asleep, staying asleep or sleeping more than usual.
2. Eating a lot or not at all.
3. Increased crying or tearfulness.
4. Persistent feeling of lethargy and useless like a failure.

Lately, if you have given birth and feelings like sadness, uneasiness, irritation or exhaustion are over- powering you, don’t under estimate yourself in fact try to overcome them. Here are a few tips that might help you in winning over the circumstances:

1. Avoid bottling-up your feelings; give them an outlet, by actually talking to someone.

2. Get in touch with people who can help you with child care, household chores and errands. This social support network will help you find time for yourself so you can rest.

3. Give exclusive time to yourself, at least fifteen minutes a day.

4. When things are not going as you had desired for, do not get angry with yourself, in fact try some relaxing exercises, they’ll be of great help.

5. Childbirth brings many changes, and parenting itself is challenging. Face it with open hands than taking it as a burden.

6. You’re not expected to be a ’supermom.’ Be honest about how much you can do, and ask other people to help you.

7. Talk with your doctor about how you feel. He or she may offer counseling and/or medicine that can help.
