Despite coming out of the Post Natal Depression (PND), it is true that scars and the remains of the pain suffered during the period keep on haunting the mother through out her life. It’s natural for a mother to resist the idea of having another baby...as she fears that the same mental trauma, anxiety and depression might erupt again. If this is the case with you or some one dear to you, then Guardian has come up with a series of advice from a number of counselors that can help you to protect yourself from experiencing post-natal depression again.

I’ve tried to bring in some of the suggestions here:

1. Make it a point that you tell your GP about the PND history of yours well in advance, this way he will improvise upon his strategy to monitor your pregnancy.

2. You can become a part of local PND support groups apart from building up a network of friends and relatives to get practical and emotional support.

3. Never compromise upon your rest and at the same time keep yourself active too with some light exercises that will relieve the feelings of tiredness and depression.

4. Another useful technique is to film you and your baby together and watch it to find the signs of positive interaction between the two of you. This will increase the attachment level.

5. Make it a practice to talk with your baby and give him time to respond back, this communication will encourage intimacy between you too, leaving no space for any kind of tensions and depression.

Try these...and I’m sure you’ll be able to combat that fear of getting PND again. Know the fact that there exist many women who had PND after their first baby but had normal lives following their subsequent deliveries...even you can be one of those happy mothers.
