Diabetes is becoming a common ailment among kids, a large number of kids are falling a prey to the deadly disease. But that doesn’t mean they cannot enjoy the tricks and treats this Halloween. Here are a few tips for the parents of such kids, following which can make your kid enjoy the spooky festival all the more and in a healthy manner.
1. Allow treats in moderation. Suggest that your child save a few and trade the rest in for a gift.
2. Check carbohydrates in your child’s meal plan, check blood glucose and plan for more activity.
3. Extra physical activity can sometimes counter the extra candy and allow for treats without extra insulin. Talk to your doctor, diabetes educator or dietician.
4. Substitute candy with lower-carbohydrate treats. Pass out stickers, spider rings, temporary tattoos, etc.
Read them and if possible try to follow them...I’m sure you kid will thank you for giving him a Halloween full of fun and health at the same time.
