I love the culture of my country, but certain things specially related to gender discrimination make me feel otherwise. Today when Indian girls are no ways less than boys ... no matter what the field is, girls are coming out in flying colors. Even at such a juncture a female child born in a family is still considered a taboo and a boy’s birth is celebrated.

It came as a shock to me when I read that more than 10m female births may have ended up in abortion and sex selection in the past 20 years. It’s a pity that technology is taking a toll on the life of 500,000 girls every year. Even more shocking was the fact that ‘girl deficit’ was more common among educated women.

Despite the fact that, sex selective abortions are banned in India for more than a decade, still it is in progress. I hope a day will come when the birth of a girl will be celebrated with equal zeal as of a boy, for this is the most disgusting kind of a treatment that a mother can give her child. It’s not the fault of the poor baby, that she’s a girl...even she has the right to open her eyes in this world.
