In an unexpected incident a 11-week-old boy was burnt by a nappy that had been dried in the microwave. The accident made The Children, Youth and Women’s Health Service warn parents about the dangers of heating clothes for children.
The heated nappy burnt the infant’s genital area and he is being treated at an Adelaide hospital. Later on, the infant injuries were declared not to be life threatening.
It has been learnt from the Health Service sources that the parent had run out of dried nappies due to rain and cold weather as it was raining and the parent must have put it into the microwave without realising that microwaves don’t heat evenly.
Pam Linke from the Health Service said:
Cold weather, no more nappies. You’ve washed them, you stick them in the microwave to dry. Something in the microwave can feel quite cool on the outside and be actually burning on the inside.
Health services also warned that in case if parents run out of nappies the best way at that time is to use old sheets or towels instead of heating the old ones.
