Researchers from the Universities of Columbia, Pennsylvania and Michigan have postulated that babies with low birth weight may experience cognitive and motor deficits as teens.
They surveyed 474 teens of 16 years of age who weighed less than 2,000g at the time of birth with peers born at a normal weight.
They concluded that the intelligence scores of these children were less as compared with the teens born at normal weight. Also they had some motor problem like difficulty in writing letter formation to coordination or posture problems.
Hence, they asserted that low birth weight might persist long past infancy. However, you may reduce this risk by taking regular prenatal care during pregnancy. Healthy eating, exercising and keeping away from tobacco, alcohol, and drugs will also add feather to your cap. After all, you cannot take the risk of baby’s cognitive and motor skills.
