Every now and then we come across benefits of breast feeding for a baby’s overall development. But recently I came across a study that revealed how breast feeding is beneficial for a mother. Yes, as per a research conducted by American Medical Association breastfeeding lowers a woman’s risk of developing diabetes by 15 percent each year she nurses. And the thing to note is that benefit lasts about 15 years.
The basic reason that goes behind this benefit is the calories body burns while breast feeding. Around 500 calories are burned in a day and this helps to check the blood sugar levels. Breast feeding keeps a mothers body sensitive to insulin which a diabetic person is not.
``Supporting breast feeding is not just an important issue for babies. It’s a woman’s health issue,'’ said lead author Alison Stuebe of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. ``It’s not hard to imagine that level of using calories makes a difference in terms of long-term health, metabolism and diabetes risk.'’
Other than diabetes breastfeeding benefits the nursing mother in many other ways including reduced chances of cancer and osteoporosis.
UN claims breast feeding is saving the lives of 6 million babies a year, and topping it are loads of benefits that a mother derives from the practice. In the light of all this I don’t find a single valid reason a woman should say no to breast feed her baby.
