Abortion on grounds of physical perfection, is it justified?
Abortions have always been a hard truth to swallow for most of the ethical groups all over the world. In addition, the recent trend of mothers going in for terminations just because they come to know that the baby will be born with some treatable physical defects like webbed fingers or extra digits, has again posed a question mark before motherhood.
No doubts, parents always wish to have healthy and perfect babies. But, is it justifiable to take a life even before he enters the world, just because the baby is not perfect as per your parameters?
Does the truth that the baby has some physical defects take away his rights of being called a part of you? No, he is still very much your own, a result of your union...so, you have all the obligation to bring him into the world, unless the surgeons confirm that the defects will make the life of the baby miserable. This doesn’t mean that the law considering an abortion legal in case it deals with ’serious handicap’, you will adopt a disposable attitude to human lives and discard a life if it’s not up to the standards.
In cases like these, parents are required to take best possible medical advice and should not jump directly to extreme acts. You never know there is a treatment for the defect or for that matter; the defect might not come in the way of child’s development ever.
Technologies such as ultrasound are just a help to doctors and parents to know the well-being of the baby - don’t use it as a yardstick to decide the lifespan as a child.
Remember, no one is perfect and what will you do in case your child loses one of his limbs or sight in some accident later in his life, will you discard him? Think once and you’ll know what you ought to do.
