Do you remember the $100 Laptop, the project spearheaded by MIT? ...if not then I’ll tell you that it is a simple laptop costing around $100, so that every child in the developing countries will have one. No doubt it’s an amazing idea but I was forced to think otherwise when I read what Triple pundit wrote about the massive e-waste that will be created once every child will have this laptop. How will nations dispose off these laptops? It’s very disappointing to see that company has no where mentioned about machine’s longevity or post-use possibilities.

OK let’s talk in wider terms now. Have you ever thought that in the mad race to make our kids technologically advance, we keep on stuffing their rooms with all sorts of gadgets, gizmos, toys, mobile phones, iPods and what not.

Its Christmas and we have transformed into shopping zombies, who are thinking nothing except for buying the latest of the toys for that little techie. We do not care at all where all these toys and gadgets will be disposed once the kids throw them. For us it may not be an issue at all, but for nations disposing off the e-waste is a major problem.

The indicators suggest that we are getting wealthier...both technologically as well as financially. We can buy almost anything for the kids, but do you know this success is harmful for the environment to what extent?

One cannot even imagine the extent to which the industrial technology is polluting the entire world with its heavy metal laden products. The blind race of technology and electronic boom will not take us any where...so, please do not get entice by that $100 tag and do not let the festive spirit make you mad for shopping. Just think before you buy.
